Dark clouds and a starry night sky over ESO's La Silla Observatory in Chile

Dark clouds and a starry night sky over ESO's La Silla Observatory in Chile

The center of the Milky Way emerges between two telescopes at the European Southern Observatory’s La Silla Observatory in Chile’s Atacama Desert with splatters of light embedded in dark clouds.

Two gleaming nebulae can be seen between the telescopes: the Trifid Nebula (left) and the Lagoon Nebula (right). They can be found in the constellation Sagittarius, and their red color comes from hydrogen atoms ionized by young stars in these clouds. The Trifid Nebula also shows a blue tint caused by dust reflecting the light of some of these stars. However, most of the dust in this image appears as dark clouds. When not lit up by nearby stars, interstellar dust clouds block the light behind them, thus appearing black against the starry background.

The telescope to the left is the European Southern Observatory’s New Technology Telescope (NTT). It was a pioneer in active optics, a technology that maintains the telescope mirror’s shape during observations despite deformations due to weight or temperature. To the right we see the European Southern Observatory (ESO) 3.6-meter telescope, home to the exoplanet hunting instruments High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS) and Near Infra-Red Planet Searcher (NIRPS), and a very important telescope for the astronomer that took this picture, José Rodrigues.

“It is very special as I grew up with a poster of the 3.6 m in my room, dreaming of using it to find exoplanets”––a dream he has now realized as an exoplanet researcher.

Image Description: The image shows two white telescopes on two hills on the bottom left and right of the frame. In the background, the night sky features a lot of stars, and, in the center of it, a dark cloud, in tones of black and brown, that goes from top to bottom. In the bottom of this cloud, spots shining in red and pink, and blue, appear. Another telescope can be seen further away in the picture.

Aurora over Iceland

Aurora over Iceland

Photographer Marko Korosec: "Spectacular northern lights display over Hofn and Vestrahorn, Iceland this evening as strong solar wind arrived."

Also known as the northern lights (aurora borealis) or southern lights (aurora australis), auroras are colorful, dynamic, and often visually delicate displays of an intricate dance of particles and magnetism between the Sun and Earth called space weather. When energetic particles from space collide with atoms and molecules in the atmosphere, they can cause the colorful glow that we call auroras.

Apparent Colors of The Moon from Earth's Atmosphere

Apparent Colors of The Moon from Earth's Atmosphere

What color is the Moon? It depends on the night—and the time. Outside the Earth's atmosphere, the dark Moon, shines by reflected sunlight. It appears as a magnificently brown-tinged gray. This image highlights a collection of apparent colors of the full Moon on Earth, documented by an astrophotographer over ten years from locations across Italy.

A red- or yellow-colored Moon usually indicates a Moon seen near the horizon. There, blue light has been scattered away by a long path through the Earth's atmosphere at times laden with fine dust. A blue-colored Moon is more rare and can indicate an atmosphere carrying larger dust particles. What created the purple Moon is unclear—it may be a combination of several effects. The last image captures the total lunar eclipse of July 2018—where the Moon, in Earth's shadow, appeared a faint red—due to light refracted through air around the Earth.

Have you ever seen an unusually colorful Moon?

Shenzhou-23 Advances Science Experiments & Maintenance | China Space Station

Shenzhou-23 Advances Science Experiments & Maintenance | China Space Station

China's Shenzhou-23 crew has been living and working in orbit for over five months, carrying out scientific experiments, maintaining the Tiangong Space Station and managing their health in coordination with ground control to ensure the steady operation of their space home.

Multiple projects advanced as planned last week. Using optical 3D spatial measurement equipment, the astronauts—Zhu Yangzhu, Zhang Zhiyuan and Lai Ka-ying—alternately touched their noses and a blue handrail with their right index fingers to collect data on tactile and proprioceptive perception of mechanical forces in microgravity.

They also completed behavioral tests for visual motion processing experiments. Wearing electroencephalogram (EEG) recording devices and virtual reality (VR) headsets, they conducted tests including weak-stimulus brain-computer interface, microgravity intuitive physics, and spatial cooperative coding and regulation experiments; ground researchers will conduct follow-up studies based on downlink data.

Last week, the crew completed the collection, centrifugation and storage of blood samples for in-orbit medical examinations and related experiments.

Following the experiment schedule, the crew replaced gas cylinders in the combustion science experiment cabinet, cleaned samples from the containerless experiment cabinet's chamber, maintained electrodes in the axial mechanism, and replaced the window cover lens.

The crew completed platform inspections and replaced components of the water treatment subsystem in the core module, continuing to ensure the stable operation of the station's regenerative life support system.

The three astronauts underwent 12-lead ECG examinations and ambulatory ECG and blood pressure monitoring, and received diagnosis and treatment using a traditional Chinese medicine diagnostic instrument to continuously monitor their condition in orbit.

They also exercised as scheduled to counteract the physiological effects of microgravity and maintain good physical and mental health.

The three astronauts were sent into space aboard the Shenzhou-23 spacecraft on May 24, with one of them scheduled to spend a full year in orbit.

Expedition 75 Crew to Earth: "Happy Halloween!" | International Space Station

Crew Updates: "Space crops research wrapped up the week following the completion of the first of two power upgrade spacewalks at the International Space Station. The Expedition 75 crew members rounded out their research schedule with virtual reality and super intelligence studies.

The orbital outpost has a new roll-out solar array that is generating power after flight engineers Anil Menon of NASA and Joshua Kutryk of the Canadian Space Agency installed it during a spacewalk on Thursday, October 29, 2026. Menon and Kutryk spent seven hours and 11 minutes in the vacuum of space attaching the roll-out solar array to the port side truss structure then releasing its tension bolts allowing the solar array to unfurl, or roll out, on its own during a ten-minute process.

The pair will install one more roll-out solar array on Thursday, Nov. 5, to complete the yearslong process that began in June 2021 to augment the space station’s power generation system. Menon and Kutryk will install the eighth and final roll-out solar array on the starboard side of the truss structure increasing the station’s power generating capacity from 160 kilowatts to about 215 kilowatts."

A "Giant Cosmic Cat Spotted!" | Happy Halloween from NASA!

A "Giant Cosmic Cat Spotted!" | Happy Halloween from NASA!

Pspspsp! Just in time for Halloween, NASA’s Hubble and James Webb Space Telescopes recently stared at an eerie star-forming scene within the Carina Nebula, a massive gas and dust cloud located approximately 7,500 light-years away from Earth. The two telescopes offer complementary views of the shadowy form, nicknamed the Cat’s Head Nebula.

Hubble’s visible-light view shows the cat as a dark, elongated dust pillar and hints of young forming stars, while Webb’s infrared-light imagery unveils many stars and other hidden details.

Rainbow and 'Curtains' of Virga over Chile | Earth Science

Rainbow and 'Curtains' of Virga over Chile | Earth Science

Photographer Erwin Enrique Sandoval Vargas: "Sunset in Coyhaique with a beautiful rainbow and curtains of virga illuminated by the last rays of the sun."

Virga is also called Fallstreifen, fallstreaks, and precipitation trails. Virga are wisps or streaks of water or ice particles falling out of a cloud but vaporizing before reaching the Earth’s surface as precipitation.

Virga is frequently seen trailing from altocumulus and altostratus clouds, but also is discernible below the bases of high-level cumuliform clouds where precipitation is falling into a dry subcloud layer. It typically exhibits a hooked form. The streaks descend nearly vertically just under the precipitation source but appear to be almost horizontal at their lower extremities. Such curvature of virga can be produced simply by effects of strong vertical wind shear, but ordinarily it results from the fact that droplet or crystal vaporization decreases the particle terminal fall velocity near the ends of the streaks. Under certain conditions, virga is associated with dry microbursts, formed as a product of the vaporization.

Chile, officially the Republic of Chile, is a country in the Southern Cone of southwestern South America. It is the southernmost country in the world and the closest to Antarctica, extending along a narrow strip of land between the Andes Mountains and the Pacific Ocean.

The Starry Dandelion and Cosmic Gecko: NGC 6520 in Sagittarius | Gemini South

The Starry Dandelion and Cosmic Gecko: NGC 6520 in Sagittarius | Gemini South

Millions of years ago, a dust cloud about 5,200 light-years from the Sun coalesced to begin the process of star birth. Today, some 190 million years later, NGC 6520 is ablaze with hot, massive young stars arrayed in a dandelion seed-shaped cluster. Not far away lies the gecko-shaped remains of what may be their birth cloud, Barnard 86. This image, taken using the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph on Gemini South, shows details in a 9.7- x 5.4-arcmin section of a larger, highly populated region in the Sagittarius star cloud. It provides the clearest optical view of the cluster and its nearby dark-cloud companion.

The total mass of the stars in NGC 6520 is roughly equivalent to 300-400 times the mass of the Sun, while the nearby cloud contains enough material to make about 3,000 more stars like the Sun. The close proximity between the star cluster and its nearby dark-cloud companion suggests the two are related. A survey of the southern sky (released in 2001) that singled out hydrogen-alpha emissions from warm, ionized interstellar gas shows a nebula extending from the dark globule to embrace the star cluster.

Image Details: The star cluster NGC 6520 and the Bok Globule Barnard 86, as imaged by the Gemini South telescope, using GMOS. The image is 9.7 x 5.4 arcminutes and is rotated 17 degrees east of north. This color composite is made using the following four filters: u-band = blue; g-band = cyan; r-band = yellow; and i-band = red. The cluster, is about 200 million years old, and lies around 5,500 light-years away from the Sun, in the direction of the constellation Sagittarius.

Amateur note: NGC 6520 and Barnard 86 are popular observation targets for moderate-to-large telescopes (8-14” apertures). Look for the cluster and its neighboring Bok globule are set against the starry background the Sagittarius star cloud, centering your telescope on RA 18H 03.3 m, DEC -27º 53’ for the cluster. Barnard 86 lies a few minutes to the west.

Meteor above Mountain Wave over Colorado

Meteor above Mountain Wave over Colorado

In meteorology, a standing wave refers to a wave that remains stationary in a moving fluid, often seen in atmospheric conditions. Mountain waves are oscillations of airflow that form on the leeward side of a mountain range, where winds descend after crossing the peak, creating a stationary wave pattern.

Meteors are normally visible in the sky for just a few seconds, so it takes skill and a bit of luck to capture one on camera. Events like meteors, also known as shooting stars, happen a lot closer to Earth than you might think. Meteors typically become visible to the naked eye about 75–120 km (47–75 miles) above Earth’s surface. They usually disintegrate as they travel through the atmosphere at altitudes of 50–95 km (31–59 miles).

Colorado is a state in the Western United States. It is one of the Mountain states, and Southwestern region of the United States, sharing the Four Corners region with Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. It is also bordered by Wyoming to the north, Nebraska to the northeast, Kansas to the east, and Oklahoma to the Southeast.
