After a relatively quiet start to the Atlantic hurricane season, Erin became the first hurricane of the year in the Atlantic basin on Aug.15 and rapidly intensified into a major Category 5 storm the following day. This intensification is one of the fastest on record.

The White House budget request on May 2, 2025, calls for a 24 percent cut to NOAA's budget. The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has already terminated over 800 NOAA employees, raising concerns about the frequency of essential forecasting tasks like launching weather balloons.
