A Memorable Aurora Australis | International Space Station

Expedition 75 flight engineer and NASA astronaut Anil Menon: "I’ll never forget this sight. Tonight I saw my first aurora from space. Luckily, there is a video to help remember and captured it perfectly.  The KP index was over 5 tonight because of a solar event and the sky over Australia lit up and the green snaked across the atmosphere.  I was filled with awe and gratitude. It’s a beautiful planet we share."

This is Anil Menon's first spaceflight mission after he was selected as part of NASA’s 2021 astronaut class.

Also known as the northern lights (aurora borealis) or southern lights (aurora australis), auroras are colorful, dynamic, and often visually delicate displays of an intricate dance of particles and magnetism between the Sun and Earth called space weather. When energetic particles from space collide with atoms and molecules in the atmosphere, they can cause the colorful glow that we call auroras.
