Distant Interacting Galaxies Arp 323 in Pisces | Subaru Telescope

Distant Interacting Galaxies Arp 323 in Pisces | Subaru Telescope

Arp 323 (NGC 7783) is a pair of interacting galaxies in Pisces. It consists of Arp 323A on the right and Arp 323B on the lower left. Arp 323A is an active galaxy believed to host an actively accreting supermassive black hole at its center. A long, striking tidal stream, resembling a tadpole’s tail, extends toward the lower left of the image.

Distance from Earth: 370 million light-years

Recent studies suggest this structure may have formed through the interaction of three galaxies, including a dwarf galaxy.

Together with several neighboring galaxies, Arp 323 forms the small galaxy group known as Hickson Compact Group 98 (HCG 98).
