Spiral Galaxy NGC 4045 in Virgo | Subaru Telescope
The spiral galaxy NGC 4045, located in the Virgo constellation, displays two distinct spiral arms extending from its bright central nucleus to its outer regions. A faint blue spiral arm stretches to the right, indicating that stars are actively forming in the outer regions of this galaxy.
Distance from Earth: ~110 million light-years
Below NGC 4045 lies another galaxy, NGC 4045 A. Although it appears close enough to be gravitationally interacting with NGC 4045, it is actually a far more distant galaxy aligned along the same line of sight from Earth, and the two galaxies are not physically associated.
NGC 4045 was discovered by German-British astronomer William Herschel on December 20, 1784. It was also observed by German astronomer Heinrich Louis d'Arrest on April 10, 1863, causing it to be listed a second time in the New General Catalog, as NGC 4046.
