NASA Artemis II Crew Saw Impact Flashes on Moon's Far Side
Hear from the Artemis II crew about impact flashes—bursts of light caused by pieces of space debris hitting the ground—that they saw while they were on the other side of the Moon, during a planned loss of comms. Here is what it was like at two key points in the story: when the crew witnessed the flashes, and when the Lunar Science Team received the news back at Mission Control.
What else did the Artemis II crew see around the Moon?
Their photographs, observations, drawings, and annotations created a unique scientific record that is now available for you to explore: https://go.nasa.gov/Artemis2LunarScience
The Artemis II Mission involved a ten-day test flight that carried NASA’s Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency (CSA) astronaut Jeremy Hansen 252,756 miles from Earth before splashing down off the coast of San Diego. This mission tested Orion’s life-support, navigation, and deep-space systems and set the stage for future U.S.-crewed lunar landings and, eventually, the first missions to Mars.
