Audio: Martian Dust Devils & Electrical Discharge | NASA's Perseverance Rover

Audio: Martian Dust Devils & Electrical Discharge | NASA's Perseverance Rover

In this audio clip generated by data from the SuperCam microphone aboard NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover, the sound of an electrical discharge can be heard as a Martian dust devil flies over the Mars rover. The recording was collected on Oct. 12, 2024, the 1,296th Martian day, or sol, of Perseverance’s mission on the Red Planet.

0:04 The front wall of the dust devil can be heard about four seconds into the recording.

0:09 The three crackles heard at about nine and 10 seconds were generated by the electrical discharge. The first two are the radio static created by the discharge’s electromagnetic signal; the last crackle was created by a pressure wave from the static discharge. Looking at the time delay between the crackles, the SuperCam instrument team estimates the discharge occurred about 6.2 feet (1.9 meters) away from the microphone.

0:14 At about 14.5 seconds, dust grains make a faint sound when they impact the microphone.

0:16 At 16 seconds, the second, trailing wall of the dust devil is heard.
