Interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS: View from Namibia

The NASA-funded Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) telescope in Chile discovered the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS on July 1, 2025.

Comet 3I/ATLAS appears relatively normal when compared to Solar System comets, therefore providing more evidence that our Solar System is a somewhat typical one. For example, Comet 3I/ATLAS has a broadly similar chemical composition and ejected dust.

Namibia, officially the Republic of Namibia, is a country in southern Africa. Its borders include the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Angola and Zambia to the north, Botswana to the east and South Africa to the south; in the northeast, approximating a quadripoint, Zimbabwe lies less than 200 meters (660 feet) away along the Zambezi River near Kazungula, Zambia.
