Clearest Image Ever of Betelgeuse Star’s Companion | ESO
Astronomers have finally obtained firm evidence that Betelgeuse, a famous star in the Orion constellation, is not alone. Using the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) they have obtained the clearest image ever of what likely is Betelgeuse B, a star orbiting Betelgeuse. This can help explain its brightness variations.
Recent data suggests the Betelgeuse star's distance is closer to 642 or up to 724 light-years. Measuring stellar distances directly is challenging for large, variable stars.
