Fast Evolving Sunspot AR 4493: Larger than 7 Planet Earths View from Romania

Astrophotographer Maximilian-Vlad Teodorescu: "Yesterday, sunspot 4493 was barely detectable, today it is the biggest sunspot group on the Earth-directed side of the Sun. What an evolution. This might as well be the trigger for some nice flares, Earth directed."

A canyon-shaped hole has opened in the sun's atmosphere, and it is spewing a stream of solar wind directly toward Earth. G1-class geomagnetic storms are possible when the solar wind arrives on July 22, 2026. New sunspot 4493 is emerging rapidly from the depths of the sun. It has taken the shape of a gigantic ring. This sunspot ring is 100,000 km wide, spacious enough to swallow 7 planet Earths

AR4493 is crackling with M-class solar flares, yet even stronger explosions are possible. The sunspot has a 'beta-gamma-delta' magnetic field where opposite polarities are crowded together in explosive proximity. Earth is squarely in the strike zone if an X-flare occurs today . . .

Solar flares are powerful bursts of energy. Flares and solar eruptions can impact radio communications, electric power grids, navigation signals, and pose risks to spacecraft and astronauts.

Solar cycle 25 is the current solar cycle, the 25th since 1755, when extensive recording of solar sunspot activity began. It started in December 2019 with a minimum smoothed sunspot number of 1.8. It is expected to continue until about 2030. While it was initially predicted by most scientists that cycle 25 would be relatively weak, solar activity has been much stronger than forecasts have indicated.
