High Solar Activity Affecting Camera Imaging | International Space Station

High Solar Activity Affecting Camera Imaging | International Space Station

Expedition 73 astronaut Kimiya Yui of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA): "Hello, everyone! The time-lapse I'm introducing today is a collaboration of the Moon, aurora, and the lights of European cities. The Gemini constellation, Leo constellation, Jupiter, and more in the night sky are also beautiful. It might be quite difficult, but it could be fun to compare and see which city's lights they are, as there are many lights like stars on the ground, by looking at a map."

Energetic solar particles are striking the camera's complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) image detector. Image noise is an important side-effect of strong radiation events. More than ten solar flares, including those rated with the highest score of X, occurred between November 9-10, 2025. The effect of them will reach the Earth on November 11-12 in the form of geomagnetic disturbances, but the risk of repeated events remains.
